The Journey from DFHO to ADO

20 Years in Motion
In 2006, the Danish fitness industry stood at a crossroads. The industry was growing explosively but lacked common direction, standards, and a unified voice. Therefore, Fitness.dk contacted Fitness World. Although together they represented the majority of the market, the ambition wasn't solely about the large chains. The vision was far grander: to unite the entire industry – including the many independent centers – and create a common foundation for quality, accountability, and professional development.
This marked the beginning of DFHO.
From day one, it was about more than just training. DFHO worked purposefully to establish common industry standards, ensure safe training environments, and elevate quality across the entire sector. The collaboration with Anti Doping Denmark became a crucial turning point, making Denmark a pioneer in doping control within commercial fitness centers.
But it also marked the beginning of something even bigger.
Over the next 20 years, the fitness industry evolved from being just gyms to becoming an active part of Danes' health and prevention efforts. Fitness centers became places where people not only exercised – but improved their quality of life, prevented illness, and built communities.
The industry took on greater responsibility. The focus shifted from solely being about training and performance to also encompassing mental well-being, rehabilitation, community building, and the prevention of lifestyle diseases. Collaboration between the industry, municipalities, healthcare stakeholders, and politicians grew year by year, and fitness centers became an increasingly important part of Danes' daily lives and health.
Today, DFHO is history, and the baton has been passed to Active Denmark Organisation – ADO. Building on the foundation established in 2006, ADO continues to work towards the vision of a strong, responsible, and professional industry that is an active player in the future of health in Denmark.
ADO strives for the commercial fitness industry to be recognized as an equal partner in prevention and public health efforts. The goal is clear: more Danes should be physically active, healthier, and part of strong communities.
Exercise and movement are no longer just a private choice – they are a societal investment. A stronger preventive effort through commercial fitness centers can help relieve the healthcare system, reduce lifestyle diseases, and improve the quality of life for thousands of people.
Therefore, ADO also works to improve framework conditions for Danes, including increased tax deduction opportunities for training in commercial fitness centers, so that more people gain access to an active and healthy lifestyle. The vision is closer collaboration between the commercial industry, the healthcare system, municipalities, and politicians – where the fitness industry becomes a natural and integrated part of future prevention efforts in Denmark.
From industry association to societal actor. From exercise to public health. This is the journey from DFHO to ADO.
